Principle

The maximum flow rate and tidal volume of the air jet entering the mask is greater than the patient's breathing, so the oxygen concentration is constant, because the high-speed flushing of the internal mask, the air after breathing is difficult to remain in the mask, so there is no repeated breathing. Patients who are treated for hypoxia with hypercapnia need to choose Venturi Mask because it can accurately control oxygen concentration.

Flow problem

Although Venturi Mask is considered a high-flow system, it does not always guarantee a total flow of oxygen above 35% in patients with high inspiratory flow requirements. The problem with air entrainment systems is that as FiO2 increases, the ratio of air to oxygen decreases. For example, for 30%, the ratio is eight parts air and one part oxygen.

For 40%, the ratio is reduced to 3:1. Since the jet in the venturi mask typically limits the oxygen flow to 12 to 15 liters per minute, the total flow decreases as the ratio decreases. At a flow rate of 12 liters per minute of oxygen and a setting of 30% FiO2, the total flow rate was 108 L / min. At 40% FiO2 setting, the total flow will drop to 48 L / min.
